Of Gods and Queens and Birds and Bees

Having lived a leftist life in a far right community, I have been exposed to both sides of the theological denial of homosexuality as a natural occurance. "It is a choice," say those in the religious majority. They turn their backs on their own brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers. Pray hard enough and God will help you rid yourself of this abominable lifestyle, they insist. That being said, I’ve heard the arguments from the other side of the fence as well. The counter argument generally tends to be something along the lines of, "if I am a product of God, and I am made in His image, who are you to tell God His design is flawed?" This is usually met by the theological persecutor with the cop out of free will. Free will, it is said, is a gift to humanity from God. The choice to love Him or to turn from Him.

In this argument, I feel there is a fundemental flaw. Free will is a gift to humanity, it is said. Posessed not by the angels in Heaven, nor the beasts on earth. Given solely to the most beloved of His creations. So your dog has no free will. When he looses his bowels on your carpet, it is the will of God. But more important to the flaw in the free will argument, when he mounts another male dog, that is also the will of God. Animals were, it is said, placed on the earth to serve Man. Beasts and toil and whatnot. They do not posses the gift of free will and cannot, therefor, be vessels of choice. So the 2%-10% of any non-homo sapien homosexuality found in nature must be divine will. When two dolphins get their L7 on or when a little boy bunny plays hop on pop with another little boy bunny, you are seeing God’s will at work. God is either fine with homosexual behavior, or He’s into homoerotic beastiality. Or, even more likely, it’s just nature doing what nature does.

I suppose theists could argue Satan has a hand in the animal world, but to what end? Animals have no souls, it is said, so what would be the point of corrupting the little leather daddy bonobo? Unless He’s into Animal Planet Gone Wild as well. Not believing in God or Satan, I see the answer being that nature, when confronted with a stable population nearing capacity, produces members of said population which are functional in the social group, but which produce no offspring of their own. It is a pretty neat system, if you ask me. Homosexual members of society provide great contributions, but do not further the unchecked population growth which would, ultimately, destroy the resources of the society. Then again, the idea of a deity who gets His kicks making animals have orgies is pretty funny. Maybe I should start going to church.
